Commission publishes new local visit reports - 18 December 2024

Publication date: 18 Dec, 2024

The Mental Welfare Commission today published eight new reports following visits to mental health services and community services and one prison in Scotland.

Every year the Commission visits around 150 wards and units for people with mental ill health, learning disability, dementia or related conditions in Scotland. From this year, these visits are being extended to community mental health teams.

During the visits Commission visitors talk to patients, relatives and staff, and examine records. A report is published after each visit. The Commission expects a response to each of its recommendations within three months of the reports being published.

Today’s reports highlight positive findings, aspects of care and treatment where we think the service could do better, and making recommendations for change where necessary.

Claire Lamza, executive director (nursing), Mental Welfare Commission, said:

“This month our reports show, once again, the importance of consistent, detailed record-keeping and regular audits. These allow all staff involved in care to see evidence of people’s progress in their treatment and help foster a culture of openness and transparency. This also ensures that all care and treatment is appropriately authorised to meet people's needs.

“Our reports continue to highlight how important it is that individuals, their families and carers are actively involved in person-centred care planning. We have seen the results when this happens, and how this can be of benefit to people receiving care and treatment.”
