Advance statements - booklets, posters, memory sticks and postcards now available

Publication date: 4 May, 2016

We have been working with people around the country to help share information on the benefits of advance statements.

Advance statements are written statements made by a person when they are well, setting out the care and treatment they would prefer, or would not wish to receive, if they become mentally unwell in future. They must be taken into account by anyone treating that person in future.

They can be really useful in helping ensure that patients' views are taken into account, but we know they are not yet widely used.

In March, we launched an awareness-raising campaign featuring films with interviews with people who have had mental ill health, psychiatrists and a community psychiatrist nurse, all talking about the benefits - and sometimes the challenges - of writing an advance statement.

Colin McKay, our chief executive, also featured in one of the films, explaining changes in legislation that are taking place next year, including a new role for the Commission in holding an advance statement register for Scotland.

We have an area on our website containing all of the films, and downloadable versions of our supporting materials including a booklet, a poster, postcards and sample forms to use when writing an advance statement and a personal statement, along with wider guidance.

We also now have hard copy versions of the booklet, poster and postcards that we can send to you on request. We also have a number of memory sticks with all of the films on them.

After checking the web link, if you think you could help share information about advance statements, and would like a supply of any of these materials, please contact Bob Rankine at the Commission at Bob.Rankine@mwcscot.org.uk

Thank you. We intend to keep this campaign running throughout the year, and would welcome your feedback and support.
