Who we visit

Our visiting priorities

We visit people who are receiving care and treatment for a mental illness, learning disability or other mental disorder. Our primary focus is on people who receive care and treatment under mental health or incapacity law. On our visits to services, however, we also meet with people who are receiving treatment on a voluntary basis. The current focus for our individual visits is on:

  • young people
  • people who have been detained for over three years
  • people who are being treated on a short-term detention certificate

In addition to this focus we also carry out:

  1. National themed visits to facilities with similar functions.
  2. Local focused visits to facilities where we have concerns that individuals in a service may be at greater risk of not receiving appropriate care and treatment.
  3. Enhanced visits to facilities where the Commission has specific concerns about the care and treatment of individuals; this might include site visits with senior service managers to review progress made towards recommendations on previous visits.
