Unannounced visits

Why do we carry out unannounced visits?

Sometimes visits to services are unannounced. We find unannounced visits give us a clear and uncluttered view of a care setting as it operates on a day to day basis.

We also carry out unannounced visits to individuals using services when we have received information about their care and treatment that concerns us. Our aim is for 25% or our visits to individuals to be unannounced.

Themed unannounced visits

Each year we carry out  themed visits to individuals using a particular type of mental health service across Scotland. These visits involve a large number of our staff and Commissioners and aim to raise the profile of particular areas of service that we feel might benefit from our focused attention. Last year our visits were to continuing care wards for older people with dementia and acute mental health admissions wards.
